  • Dental Care for Cats

Feline dental disease is less prevalent among the cat population than in dogs, yet it occurs and the consequences are serious. Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road veterinarians recommend all cats with severe tartar and plaque buildup undergo a feline dental prophy, or cleaning. Feline dental prophys are one of the important keys to pets' long term good health and pleasant breath.
Cat dental conditions requiring immediate veterinary intersession include feline ondoclastic resorptive lesions that disentegrate the tooth, feline oral cancer, feline orthodontic problems, gingivitis, inflamed gums and ulcers, and periodontitis. Typically, a good veterinary exam will reveal indicators of these problems.
The feline dental prophy at our veterinary hospitals is extremely thorough and comprehensive. It includes a pre-surgical exam, pre-anesthesia bloodwork, intravenous catheter, pre-sedation, gas anesthesia using isoflurane, full mouth radiographs, ultrasonic scaling, polishing, and fluoride treatment.  Our feline dental care services extend beyond routine care, and may also involve root canals, extractions, cancer treatment, caps and braces, and more. Currently, there is not a dental vaccine labeled for cats, although a similar product for dogs is quite successful.
Owners may also support good feline dental health by brushing the cat's  teeth daily with a pet toothpaste such as C.E.T.™ Enzymatic Toothpaste for Dogs and Cats, conducting a bi-weekly exam of the mouth (or when odor is present), using C.E.T. AquaDent™ drinking water additive, and purchasing a pet food or treats designed to promote feline dental health.

  • Dental Care for Dogs

February is Pet Dental Health Month, as we offer special discounts on dental cleanings all month! For dog owners, regular canine dental prophys, or cleanings, are one of the important keys to pets' long term good health and pleasant breath. Dental cleanings advocated by Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road veterinarians are necessary for promoting and maintaining good canine dental health on an as needed basis, which may vary from every six months for some pets, to a year of more for others.
We also recommend Pfizer Animal Health's Porphyromonas Denticanis-Gulae-Salivosa Bacterin vaccine, or rather, "the dental vaccine" for dogs. Research indicates use of this vaccine reduces the incidence of periodontal disease, the most common bacterial infection found in dogs. The vaccine protocol is a booster three weeks after the initial innoculation, and then annual vaccinations thereafter. The dental vaccine will not prevent tartar and plaque buildup, however, a dental cleaning will remedy these problems.
The canine dental prophy at our veterinary hospitals is extremely thorough and comprehensive. It includes a pre-surgical exam, pre-anesthesia bloodwork, intravenous catheter, pre-sedation, gas anesthesia using Isoflurane, full mouth radiographs, ultrasonic scaling, polishing, fluoride treatment, dental vaccine, and Oravet™ sealant treatment (optional).  Our canine dental care services extend beyond routine care, and may also involve root canals, extractions, cancer treatment, caps and braces, and more.
Owners may also support good canine dental health by brushing the dog's  teeth daily with a pet toothpaste such as C.E.T.™ Enzymatic Toothpaste for Dogs and Cats, conducting a bi-weekly exam of the mouth (or when odor is present), applying the Oravet sealant product at home, using C.E.T. AquaDent™ drinking water additive, and purchasing a pet food or treats designed to promote canine dental health.

  • Emergency and Critical Care

Animal Hospital Champions Northwest and Animal Hospital Jones Road have the facilities, equipment, skills and capabilities, and trained staff to stabilize and care for most emergency and critical care patients. Though we are not a 24-hour practice, our veterinary hospitals are open seven days a week, and several holidays, so we can be available to administer to patients when they need it.

When a crisis occurs, there is nothing more important than acting quickly to stabilize the patient. During operational hospital hours, our staff veterinarians are able to respond rapidly and decisively to emergencies. We normally function with a high staff to doctor ratio, and can shift additional personnel to critical cases when necessary. In just minutes during a crisis, our staff veterinarians can review lab results, radiographs (x-rays), echocardiogram and ultrasound images, blood gases analysis, blood chemistries and electrocardiograms. These tools help them determine if the patient needs to stabilize in an oxygen cage, undergo immediate surgery, and/or start a medical treatment plan. Because our veterinary hospitals have this diagnostic and treatment equipment in-house, it gives veterinarians immediate vital information to offer optimal patient care.

Our veterinarians are general practitioners, and, when it is in the best interests of the patient, will refer the case to a board certified critical care veterinarian or emergency care veterinary clinic.

  • Geriatric Patient Care

Aging often happens so gradually it goes unnoticed by pet owners. Then, suddenly it is apparent their beloved companions are old. We recommend special veterinary and home care for geriatric pets to monitor and preserve their good health.
At Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road, we consider large breed dogs to be geriatric at age seven, and small breeds at nine years. Cats are seniors at age nine. Geriatrics may not be underfoot as much as younger pets, but they still require lots of love and attention.
The aging process affects every organ in the body. The best news about geriatric veterinary medicine is that there are many good products and treatments available to help with dementia, arthritis, heart failure, weight problems, mental health, and other problems prominent in the senior pet population.
Our veterinarians advocate a geriatric well visit at least once a year for both cats and dogs, and semiannual or quarterly (or more) visits for the oldest or infirm elderly pets. A geriatric well visit may include the following procedures:
        - vaccinations
        - exam
        - blood work profile
        - echocardiogram
        - abdominal ultrasound
        - chest films or X-rays
        - fecal
        - blood pressure check
        - urinalysis

  • In House Laboratory

The in-house laboratory is an essential component to our ability to offer immediate, comprehensive veterinary care to patients. Our animal hospitals have the laboratory equipment available to analyze virtually all patient chemistries immediately. We also have relationships with veterinary laboratories in Houston, and at universities, in those few instances where it is in the patient's best interest to seek outside evaluation.         - neurology
        - dermatology

In some cases, patients may require the care of a veterinary specialist, and our staff veterinarians will make that recommendation.

  • PennHIP Procedure

Studies show that dogs with excessive hip laxity are at higher risk to develop Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD), the most commonly inherited orthopedic disease affecting more than 50% of dogs in some breeds. It can lead to arthritis and diminished quality of life. There is nomedical cure, however, the research-based hip screening procedure know as PennHip is the most accurate and precise method to measure hip laxity. Performed on puppies as early as 16 weeks of age, the PennHIP procedure can identify dogs susceptible to developing CHD. This can allow veterinarians to advise owners on lifestyle and preventive strategies for the pet to minimize or eliminate the progression of the disease. PennHIP involves an office consultation, sedation and submission of three radiograhs to the PennHIP Analysis center at the University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program.Vetsuite_Img_90026

  • Puppies and Kittens

All puppies and kittens newly introduced to a household should visit the veterinarian for a physical exam, fecal and vaccinations. Puppies and kittens begin a lifetime of good health when they complete the vaccination series that protects them from many dangerous and contagious diseases. Our veterinarians also recommend obedience training for puppies and spay and neuter surgeries on pets not intended for breeding, and PENNhip evaluation for large breed puppies. Additionally, heartworm and flea prevention are part of puppy and kitten care, and our staff will advise owners on age and size appropriate products for your pets. Vetsuite_Img_52331

  • Pet Wellness

At Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road, our wellness program is the building block to promoting long lived, healthy pets. We find our patients that maintain regular visits to the veterinarian for exams, dental cleanings, routine vaccinations, bloodwork, and fecals, are more likely to resolve problems in early stages, should they occur. Our veterinarians recommend wellness visits for pets of all ages.
Well care for cats and dogs also encompasses good nutrition and year round heartworm and flea prevention. Animal Hospital Champions Northwest and Animal Hospital Jones Road offer a variety of these products for sale.

  • Digital Radiology and Ultrasound

As veterinarians, we must rely on diagnostic tools such as radiographs and ultrasounds, to make treatment plans for patients that cannot explain what part of their body requires care. These tools allow us to review internal portions of the patient's body.
The high frequency digital radiology systems utilized at Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road are specifically for veterinary use. Radiographs, or X-rays, can help veterinarians identify broken bones, intestinal blockages, tissue masses and abnormalities.
Ultrasonography uses sound waves to generate images of internal structures. The ultrasound provides definition to tissue abnormalities, fluid filled encapsulated areas, and internal organs. We perform echocardiograms, which provide a picture of the heart and blood flow through the chambers, using ultrasound technology.
In many cases we combine X-ray and ultrasonagraphy technology to make accurate patient diagnoses.

  • Spay and Neuter Surgeries

The veterinarians at Animal Hospital Champions Northwest and Animal Hospital Jones Road recommend spay and neuter surgeries for all dogs and cats not intended for breeding. These routine surgeries offer health benefits to the pet, and are the best means for responsible pet owners and veterinary professionals to help reduce the population of unwanted and abandoned pets. In an effort to contribute to this worthy cause, Animal Hospital Champions Northwest and Animal Hospital Jones Road offer a significant discount on spay and neuter surgeries on Wednesday, our community service day. Clients reading this may take advantage of an additional discount by using the spay/neuter coupon on the Coupon Page of this website.
Contrary to popular myths, spaying and neutering does not make a healthy pet fat (only overfeeding and lack of exercise cause this condition). The medical term for spay is ovariohysterectomy, and veterinarians remove the pet’s reproductive organs, the ovaries and uterus. The removal of the uterus ensures the canine patient does not suffer from Pyometra, or infection of this organ, in middle to late age. Additionally, female dogs spayed prior to their first heat will have a near zero chance of developing mammary cancer. Spaying the young female feline prevents mammary cancer, noisy heat cycles and possibly urine marking in the house. The bloody mess and odor of a female in heat disappear with spaying.
Another term for neutering is castration. In this procedure the veterinarian removes the dog or cat's testicles. This renders the dog or cat sterile, and may improve the male’s behavior and manageability. Neutering prevents canine prostatitis and the uncomfortable enlargement that occurs with aging. More than 90 percent of cats will reduce roaming behavior, fighting and urine marking after the neuter procedure.
The risk of the spay and neuter surgeries is low for healthy pets, and at Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road, we make every effort to ensure our patients receive the best care. We use the safest anesthesia products, perform pre-surgical bloodwork and exams, insert an intraveneous catheter, administer and dispense pain medications and monitor the patient closely from pre-surgery through recovery. We release most all patients to rest at home the evening of the surgery, and the females and neutered dogs return in about a week for an incision check.

  • Surgery: Orthopedic Soft Tissue and Endoscopic

We hope that it is a comfort for our clients to know that Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road's surgical capabilities and facilities are extraordinary. Both veterinary hospital maintain large, sterile surgical suites where pets receive the best monitoring and support throughout surgical procedures.
We maintain patients on gas anesthesia and concentrate oxygen so there is always an endless supply. The surgery veterinary technician can review blood pressure, heart rate, oxygenation, temperature and color with our monitoring equipment constantly throughout the procedures.
Our veterinarians perform surgeries every day, and they may range from the routine, elective surgeries such as spays and neuters to more complex procedures, including emergency Caesarean sections and the repair of broken bones. We staff and equip our hospitals to execute most any surgery that is necessary for the patient.
A list of some of the orthopedic surgeries we routinely complete for patients are: anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair, luxating patella, external skeletal fixation, tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), femoral head and neck osteotomy (FHO), and toggle pin hip luxation repair, amputation, joint arthrodesis and others.
Our veterinariens are equally skilled at performing soft tissue surgeries such as a spay, neuter, stomach torsion repair, mass removal, spleen removal, mastectomy, wound repair, abcess repair, exploratory and more.
Endoscopic surgeries are less invasive, and involve smaller incisions. We provide a thorough list of the endoscopic surgeries offered at our facility on the video endoscopy section of this site.

  • Video Endoscopy

Two of the best diagnostic and treatment tools available at Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road are the video otoscope and endoscope. We are able to perform minimally invasive procedures to evaluate conditions of the canine and feline ear, nose, chest, abdominal and stomach cavity, bowel, bladder, connective tissue and joints, and even wounds, to rectify clinical problems. The video otoscope and endoscope create dramatic internal visualization and reduce trauma on the pet with such procedures as laparoscopy, vaginoscopy, rhinoscopy, gastroscopy, cystoscopy, arthroscopy, and thoroscopy.
This equipment projects using fiber optic technology for lighting and magnification. The veterinarian guides the scope to the affected area while it depicts a clear image on a high resolution monitor. Our veterinary medical staff may elect to use the video endoscope to remove foreign objects, in addition to collecting biopsy tissue samples, thus avoiding subjecting the patient to full scale exploratory surgery. Clearly the otoscope and endoscope bring ever increasing benefits to our level of patient care, and can significantly reduce recovery time for some patients.

  • Dog and Cat Boarding

When patients’ owners are unavailable to care for them, it’s reassuring to know their pets receive the best of care while boarding in the comfortable, indoor kennels at Animal Hospital Champions Northwest and Animal Hospital Jones Road. Dogs and cats receive loving, attentive treatment; fresh air in our fenced, outdoor play yard (dogs only); close observation; and nutritional meals when under the supervision of our kennel staff. Private play time is available upon request.

Cats board separately from dogs in their own special room with windows to view the outdoors. We have many different size cages and roomy runs to accommodate all dogs, from the very tiny to the large breeds.

  • Grooming and Pet Styling

Both Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road offer all breed cat and dog pet styling, or grooming, services. Pets in the care of our pet stylists savor a pampered spa day while at our “salons.” Each receives a luxurious massaging bath with superior shampoos, coat conditioning, anal sacs expression, toenail trim, ear cleaning, a blow dry, and brush out. While under the ministrations of our grooming staff, pets have the option of receiving veterinary care, if the procedures are safe when undergone in conjunstion with bathing and styling.

Our pet stylists and staff make grooming an art form, and specialize in breed specific and creative hair cuts. They also provide shaves, shed control, tooth brushing, mat removal, and toenail painting. Animal Hospital Champions Northwest and Animal Hospital Jones Road pet stylists are the only individuals who may give a firm cost estimate for these services.

All dogs and cats scheduled for this elective procedure must provide proof of current vaccinations required by Animal Hospitals Champions Northwest and Jones Road. Grooming is not available for puppies and kittens until they complete the vaccination series, although our staff encourages owners to have their pets meet the groomers before the first pet styling appointment. We also request that owners of frail or geriatric pets secure the approval of a veterinarian in advance of the grooming appointment.

  • Obedience and Behavior Training

Animal Hospital Jones Road and Animal Hospital Champions Northwest offer obedience training classes for dog owners. During this five week course, the dog, the owner and our trainer, Donna Hurley, complete her Paws to Train obedience  program together. Ms. Hurley and her dogs are obedience competition champions, and she is both an educator and a 14 year veteran training at our veterinary hospitals.

This class covers basic obedience skills, and its purpose is to give dog owners the knowledge, practice and confidence necessary to train their pets using positive methods and hands-on experience. Class "graduates" emerge with a stronger dog/owner bond, and have the opportunity to glean lots of useful tips from our resident expert. Without fail, we find owners who take a little time to personally train their pets find it to be a rewarding experience throughout the life of the dog.

The class is open to all fully vaccinated (per our veterinary hospitals protocol) dogs and their owners. For the protection of dogs participating in the course, owners must provide proof of current vaccinations no later than the first day of class. Click here to download an obedience class registration form.

NEXT OBEDIENCE CLASS BEGINS: Call for information

    LOCATION: TBD

On occasion, a pet may display deep rooted problems too difficult to conquer via a five week obedience course, or beyond the owner's time and physical constraints. For these pets, Animal Hospital Champions and Jones Road work with a professional dog trainer. Bob Manning with Manning K9, whose facility is off site. His particular expertise is to develop an approach to address the individual dog.
